The lionfish has no natural predators in the Caribbean, allowing them to multiply quickly and overtake native species. This becomes a huge danger for the local environment and aquatic life on Curacao. To control this invasion, hunting lionfish is allowed, however under strict rules to not harm the reef or other species.
The Lionfish Hunter Specialty consists of a knowledge development session on how to avoid disturbing delicate marine life while hunting lionfish, how to safely hunt and handle lionfish and how to avoid being stung by the venomous lionfish. You will also practice using the hunting tools, such as the spear and containment devices, such as the Zookeeper™. The Specialty consists of two training dives actually hunting lionfish, after which you learn how to safely clean a venomous lionfish. Upon completion of the Specialty, you receive a PADI Lion Fish Hunter specialty card but more importantly: you will have contributed to keeping our reefs healthy!
